Do you remember Tevin Campbell’s Kel Mitchell album, Back to the World? Vaguely? Barely? Right; me either. I only recall the lead single, which I didn’t like, however, I thought that title was fitting for my first post after a long hiatus from blogging, and writing in general, because I expect it to be equally underwhelming and likely go unnoticed. When I blogged in the past, I was all in. I wrote content, I interacted regularly on twitter, learned all about the google analytics and all that. The problem I had was one that has plagued me since high school, I struggle (read hate) to “write on demand.” Coming up with content to meet (self-imposed) deadlines to make sure that I was keeping my blog as relevant as possible would throw me in to fits of writers block. I like writing…a lot, just like millions of other people, however, I lack that writers grind. You know that grind, blogging, guest blogging, writing daily to be a better writer and gain some notoriety. And the thing is I envy those who have that grind. I love how blogging has lead to some strong writing careers that I have seen flourish over the years while I chill on the sidelines wishing it was me and at the same time also being relieved it isn’t me. I couldn’t find a lane when it came to blogging which made me feel somewhat unworthy of the craft. I’m not super political, I’m not a sports fanatic, I certainly can’t give dating advice, and I don’t tune into major television events that I can review or tweet live. I’m just a simple man, with a simple life, who also happens to enjoy writing. It was an itch that wouldn’t go away. I found myself drafting the most verbose emails. I would respond to some emails with four or five paragraphs when a simple “ok” would suffice. And that should give you a pretty good idea of how this incarnation of my writing will go. I’m long winded. I’m one of those people who like to see themselves write (unless on demand of course) and rather than chastise myself for it, I figured I’ll let it fly and write because I enjoy it. This is my outlet. If you happened to stumble upon these writings I hope you enjoy them. Sure, at times I’ll talk about something political, or higher education administration – the field in which I work and have a passion for, or many of the issues facing Black people in this country, or relationship stuff, definitely football (NY Giants fan!) – including fantasy football, fatherhood, family trials and tribulations, etc. you get the idea. I’ll be talking about life. Coming back to the world isn’t so bad. I think I’ll stick around this time.
